That summer’s training opened my eyes to a new way of viewing the challenge course. Chris described the course as simply another tool that we use to present our curriculum to students. His work in adventure psychology has been relevant for my fourth grade students and I have appreciated his expertise and willingness to collaborate. I leaned on him a lot the first year, and he consistently held true to his message from training. The first thing he wanted to know was my purpose—what I wanted for my students. After that, we figured out which tool would best help us get there given my students’ developmental needs and experience. Chris helped me stay grounded in the importance of thinking about the learning first rather than the flashy activity.
